Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 5838 AC4400
Location: Hubbard County Road 45
City: Cass Lake, Minnesota
Date: 12-28-2009
Remarks: After months of waiting, winter is finally here! This BNSF coal train heading for Clay
Boswell in Cohasset is the first train to travel on the Grand Forks Sub in several days. Over the
Christmas Holiday we received over a foot of snow. As soon as I heard the scanner go off, I was
out the door and looking for a place to shoot!
Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 5838 AC4400
Location: Hubbard County Road 45
City: Cass Lake, Minnesota
Date: 12-28-2009
Remarks: This should be good... Thanks to the holidays, no trains moved on the Grand Forks
Sub for several days. That allowed the 14 inches of snow we got to pile over the tracks. This is
the first train to pass over these tracks in several days.
Railroad: Northstar Rail
Locomotive: MNTX 501 MP36PH
Location: University
City: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: An inbound commuter train rolls through University on their way to downtown, right on
time. I would have never thought I'd see the day when the Twin Cities had an operating
commuter train.
Railroad: Minnesota Commercial
Locomotive: MNNR 314 Alco C424
Location: University
City: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: A rare daylight move brought out a few railfans to document the run as the
Commercial slowly makes their way into Northtown Yard.
Railroad: Elgin Joliet and Eastern
Locomotive: EJE 659 SD38-2
Location: New Brighton Diamond
City: New Brighton, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: Of course, the first time I get to catch the EJE it has to be in clouds. After making
several attempts at getting an EJE unit, intel from another railfan made us aware of this guy
sitting crewless in New Brighton. A short time later, I was poaching some shots.
Railroad: Northstar Rail
Locomotive: MNTX 603 Bombardier Cab Car
Location: University
City: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: Looking good and right on time... the second inbound commuter train for today from
Big Lake passes through University.
Railroad: Canadian Pacific
Locomotive: CP 8701 ES44AC
Location: Shoreham Yard
City: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: She'll be coming around the corner... a pair of AC motors rolls their train out to the
mainline and about to stretch their legs through the heart of Minneapolis.
Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 5838 AC4400
Location: North Shores of Pike Bay
City: Cass Lake, Minnesota
Date: 12-28-2009
Remarks: Along the north and northeast shores of Pike Bay, boaters can have a front seat to
the action on the Lakes Subdivision. Of course, one needs to know when a train is coming to
make it worth it. In today's case I had advanced warning thanks to a crew change in Cass Lake
of the train. Minutes later, the headlight was seen and this shot was had.
Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 5838 AC4400
Location: North Shores of Pike Bay
City: Cass Lake, Minnesota
Date: 12-28-2009
Remarks: Despite the windy conditions, a lot of the snow we received over the Christmas Holiday
has stuck to trees, creating a nice flocking. I know I shouldn't complain (because I actually
caught a train on the Lakes Sub), but it would have been nice to have that SD70Ace on the point!
Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 5838 AC4400
Location: Highway 371
City: Cass Lake, Minnesota
Date: 12-28-2009
Remarks: Even though the train was crawling, it still overshot the crossing. I'm not certain if it
was because of snow and ice on the rails, or if the outbound crew anticipated the inbound crew
to be ready for a mainline meet. The crew would have to get a "6.6 crew member pick-up" to
clear the highway 371 road crossing.
Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 5838 AC4400
Location: West Yard Switch
City: Cass Lake, Minnesota
Date: 12-28-2009
Remarks: The crew slowly makes way as they cross onto the Lakes Sub from the Grand Forks
Sub. Not quite enough snow for some plow action, but the undisturbed rails make for an
interesting sight as the train is about to trailblaze through the powder.
Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 5838 AC4400
Location: Potlatch
City: Cass Lake, Minnesota
Date: 12-28-2009
Remarks: Ice and snow cake these two AC motors as they roll east on the Grand Forks Sub on
the finally stretch of their trip to Cass Lake where a new crew will take the train east to Cohasset.
Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 4452 C44-9W
Location: University
City: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: First Class Railfanning... a railfan is taking in the action in probably the nicest railfan
ride I've ever seen.
Railroad: Northstar Rail
Locomotive: MNRX 603 Bombardier Cab Car
Location: Northtown Yard
City: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: An outbound commuter train rolls through Northtown Yard as a switcher is going about
their assignments in the yard.
Railroad: Northstar Rail
Locomotive: MNRX 603 Bombardier Cab Car
Location: Downtown Elk River
City: Elk River, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: It is amazing how fast these things scream down the Staples Sub. They look great,
but sound horrible! The horn on the Cab Car sounds like a Canadian Goose being tortured!
Railroad: Canadian Pacific
Locomotive: CP 8701 ES44AC
Location: Shoreham Yard
City: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: I do not know why, but I love the Canadian Pacific ES44AC's.
Railroad: BNSF
Locomotive: BNSF 5051 C44-9W
Location: Downtown Elk River
City: Elk River, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: A Z-train is rolling through Elk River, about to pass a slower moving stack train
ahead... only a matter of minutes passed between trains, and then a short wait brought the
Northstar Rail heading into Minneapolis.
Railroad: Candian Pacific
Locomotive: CP 9824 AC4400
Location: Shoreham Yard
City: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Date: 12-13-2009
Remarks: After missing out on some great photo opportunities in St. Paul, we had to follow the
train to Minneapolis to at least see it and get some photos. We didn't go into the yard because
there were hundreds of people there already ahead of us.

Remarks: After missing out on some great photo opportunities in St. Paul, we had to follow the

up at University taking in the train.
